The History Of AdVENTURE

Adventure Stem Program: A brief history and review
By Nickolas, Cameron, Michael, and Jason
The Adventure Stem Program was started in August 2009.  It is a 5th-8th grade program that is located at Herman Middle School in the Oak Grove School District.  It has four teachers and works with Herman school with the P.E. teachers and sometimes electives.  It is different than other programs because 5th and 6th graders have schedules similar to middle school students.  The program has 6 periods like middle school.  It includes math, English, Social Studies, P.E., Science, Band and an elective.  The program focuses more on science and technology and uses laptops in the classroom.
Adventure is project based learning.  The philosophy of Adventure is that students learn better when engaged in hands on learning.  Adventure wants to prepare students by having them use Science, Mathematics, Technology and Engineering.  It wants to help students be prepared with 21st Century skills and be able to work together well in groups and with people.  There was not another program like Adventure before it started.
Before Adventure, Herman used the area for special classes like sewing classes and workshop.  After a while, the rooms were not being used so Adventure was created and used the area.  Adventure was started by Manny Barbera, who used to be the superintendent of Oak Grove School District. Some names thought of for Adventure were Lighthouse and The Program.  Ms. Garcia chose the name Adventure Stems instead.  After talking to Ms. Garcia and Ms. McMillan, Adventure teachers, we learned one of the best events Adventure ever had was trash to treasure in every classroom.  One of the hardest parts of making Adventure was creating the curriculum and making sure that kids have enough hands on projects to do and have fun doing them.
In conclusion, Adventure is only a few years old and still has room to grow and change.  One thing that could be changed about Adventure is having more space and more kids in the program.  Adventure is a good program that helps prepare kids for the world today.  It is a great idea and helps learn skills that are used in the workforce and the real world.  Maybe more programs like Adventures can be started.

By: Javier Cervantes
We first asked Ms.McMillan a few questions regarding the field trip she went on with a lot of 8th graders. The questions were:
·       Was Great America fun?
·       What were the rides you went on?
·       What was your favorite ride?
·       Did you and the 8th graders walk around a lot?
·       What did you and your class end up eating for lunch?
·       What time did you come back after the field trip?
·       And last but not least, did the 8th graders give you any trouble?

Answers
A 1: “Yes the weather was nice; I got there on time, we walked around a lot. Across Great America was the 49ers’ stadium.”
A 2: “I went on only two rides, and those rides were vortex and flight deck.
A 3: “Flight deck because there are a lot of fast turns”.
A 4: “Yes, and as a matter of fact we walked a total of 3 miles.
A 5: “There was unlimited food, soda and stopped at a candy shop.

S.S Room Review
By: Andy Schultheis
This week we are doing something different. We are going to review a classroom. Not just any classroom, Mr. Heerdegens classroom. He teaches social studies and Globaloria. His classroom  is one of my favorites. He uses lots of movies to tell us about gods and myths. He is a very entertaining teacher. Over all I would give his class 4 out of 5 stars. Thanks for reading.

End of The Year Activities By Ricardo Dime

By: Ricardo Dime
So the school year in Herman is coming to a close and there are activities for students! But some students are losing their activities. The activities are the talent show, Patriot Games, and the dance! As said earlier people are losing these activities so if they get a specific number of suspensions, detentions, or tardiness, or you will not be able to go to the talent show, Patriot Games, or The Dance. So basically Herman is really expecting a lot from you in the end of the year so you can have a great end of the year instead of being in a room in detention when everybody is having fun.

5th and 6th Grade Dance

                            5th and 6th Grade Dance
                                   By Kiara Dempsey

This year there is going to be a dance for the 5th and 6th graders.  This dance is given to these two grades earned this dance from hard working and communication. This is held in the middle of the school day. Today I asked Jillian Kreifels what she liked about the dance last year; she said in response that it was kind of lame because it was in the middle of school and here were not that many people there. She also did not like how they had games there and played half of the song when you get in to the song and start dancing to it. Javier also added on that he did not like it because we had to drink from  the water outside and they didn’t have any juice to drink like the 7th   and 8th grade dances.

Bullying Assembly 5/1 By; Ricardo Dime

BULLYING ASSEMBLY!

By; Ricardo Dime
On May 1st the Bullying Assembly was held for the 6th & 7th graders. They showed them a video named; "Let's Get Real." The video showed the victims and the bullies’ point of view about bullying. There were some harsh and bad language but the 6th & 7th graders had to be mature of that. The video was basically teaching us why bullies are being picking on kids and how they are affecting students. They also taught us the different types of bullying such as; Gossip, Physical, Verbal, and etc. Their point and Ms. Sims said this is that bullying cannot be tolerated and needs to be stopped.

Mr. Heerdegen

New Teacher Mr. Heerdegen
By: Andy Schultheis and Kiara Dempsey
This week we interviewed the new teacher, Mr. Heerdegen. He took over for Mrs.Dorsey a teacher who went on maternity leave to take care of her new baby Leela. Mr. Heerdegen is a student teacher taking over classes to get his teaching credentials, becuase of this we decided to ask him a couple of questions on how he is going to teach the classes. The first question that we asked is do you like having your own class room? He replied, "Yes because I have no one telling me what to do and I can teach the class how I prefer to teach it." Secondly, we asked if kids are acting different? In response he said "Everyone is basically acting the same, loud students are still being loud." Next, we asked if he is going to change the class? He replied "We are going to read more in class, so we have no reading logs." We also asked him if he as going to be strict? he replied '' Yes, I will be strict but not too strict." Mr. Heerdegen is staying for the rest of the year to teach the classes and help engage students and design curriculum. We look forward to seeing what he has in store for us!

CST It's Dynamite!

Hey people!!! As you know the CST is on April 23, 2012. And some of you are anxious about it, don't worry! I know how it feels and i made a song with my friend Noellonnie Shaw.

Test Anxieties And Test Takin’ TipsBased On: Yonkers By Tyler The Creator
Verse 1Ima sleepwalkin’ test freak, stayed up, up all night. Only 3 hours worth of sleep. Walkin in the class like a zombie, so much anxiety. I know you pity for but don’t mess wit’ me…
(Beat)
Next time, get some sleep, when it comes to the CST, you will be the best. But, If you got no sleep you will be fast asleep, sing your self a lullaby and your grade will be cheaper than a rusty ol’ jeep.
(Beat)
Verse 2 On the test, make sure not to guess you never know if that was the easiest one. Guessin ain’t really the best, your grade can sink like the titanic. So do your personal best, always use your wits, that’s why you got a brain. If you do this you will be a beast.
(Beat)
Verse 3 On the CST, if none of these work, try to eat, avoid sugars or you might be the hulk, in a bulk bein’ all mad and might even destroy your own test. Failed, kaput, grade is nothing but a fail, not even funny because it’s an epic fail.
(Beat)
Verse 4 Always take your time, you never know if you skipped a problem, forgot to read, and rushed through like Rob Gronkowski to the end zone. Read all the problems, check your work.
Verse 5 Before the test, make sure you study and sharpen your brain or it will be dull like a ducks beak. If you don’t know how study, go to me and I’ll tell you how.
Transitions to Teach Me How To Dougie Instrumental
Teach me how to study hey
(2)Teach me how to study! Teach, teach me how to study hey!You ain’t messing with my study! I be like Ricardo (what?)Can you teach me how to Study? You know why ‘cause all the teachers love it. All you need is a book that’s super stuntin’, and you, you, you back it up and study. Put you book up front and review them subjects. All The teachers are gonna like it when they see you hit that study right, I go by Bubba and I saw him past that test (That test) Teach me how to study, teach, teach me how to study, hey! (2)All the teachers love it, All, all the teachers love it. (2)You ain’t messing with my study! End

So basically this song teaches you how to over come test taking fears.
1)Get good sleep
2)Study before the test
3)Know when the test is coming
4)Eat during the test but avoid sugars
5)Be confident

How to get your personal best on CST
1) 1 & 2 comply
2)Skip hard questions and do them later
3)Don't guess

Ok so that's it!

Dear parents,
do you want your kids to have more help in school? Then check out the AdVENURE S.T.E.M. program. S.T.E.M. stands for sciencetechnologyengineering, and math. The ADVENTURE S.T.E.M. program is a hands-on-school. We (the class) get to use computers, and we get more help on our work. Are your kids struggling with tons of homework? Not to worry! The S.T.E.M. program has a homework center and the teachers try not to give a lot of homework. The S.T.E.M. program helped a lot of kids like me because I learned a lot more at the S.T.E.M. program than at my old school, because S.T.E.M. works at your pace so everyone can learn. Everyone at the program will welcome you and help you out every step of the AdVENTURE way. Thank you for reading this, it took me a lot of thought to write this.
If you liked this or have any suggestions please comment us and tell your friends and family, we will have more post later next week.

          Sincerely,
The AdVENTURE S.T.E.M. program school news writers

So make sure to bring a lot of things like jackets, long pants, long shirts, and two pairs of shoes and socks. The things you don't get to bring are flash lights, phones, your  Nintendo DS, and any electronic devices. In science camp you get to take hikes, and have camp fires, there is an astronomy night were you can see the stars. I bet you will have a lot of learning fun. So start packing then unpacking and then start learning. That's all, because I don't want to spoil the excitement and the surprise.

The Digital Journalism Survey Graph

Bryce Yeager, Noellonnie Shaw, David Campbell, Justin Gohnert.

We surveyed the entire 6th grade digital journalism class and the results were 3 people like playing sports, 0 people like collecting things, 0 people like writing, and 16 people like other. So teachers can make the lessons more interesting by adding in stuff that involves drawing, or something that involves activities.
